IT plays vital role in managing virtual inventory
By Rohit Kaul | May 5, 2008
This Article:
Hitesh Dhingra, business head of cafegadgets.in in an interview with Rohit Kaul speaks about the role of IT in business process of the portal.

In a market like India, where Internet penetration is limited, how do you view the future of a digital lifestyle and technology products portal like cafegadgets.in?

Today, India has more than 46million internet users (as per Internet & Mobile Association of India (IAMAI)). The number is steadily growing at a rate of 40% Year-on-Year. India's Internet population has shown signs of maturing over the last few years with more and more people spending online.

Digital and technology products are the second most bought product category after travel in the online market. If we manage to reach this active e-commerce population effectively, the current existing market in itself is huge to cater to.

Also, we've spent the last one year in building relationships with vendors, working on the processes and technology, and most importantly building up a technically strong and dedicated team. Cafegadgets, today, enjoys strong relationship with over 70 brand owners and its Tier-I distributors. We're proud to be powering e-commerce for most of them.

What role does technology play in your business process? Could you provide updates on technology solutions that cafegadgets.in is currently utilizing to enhance user experience?

Our business model is fundamentally different from traditional e-tailing model of stock and sell. We work on back-to-back basis, thus technology plays a crucial role in managing the virtual inventory and keeping our operations cost to minimum. We're working closely with our key vendors on setting up Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) for automated stock and price updates.

Also, we've an efficient in-house technology team, whose only objective is to make the site as user friendly as possible. We've built this platform from scratch considering our expansion requirements and are constantly working on its usability and design.

You've recently come with mobile search based on WAP Pull technology. Please elaborate on benefits of this technology and the reasons behind coming up with mobile search?

As you must be aware, the mobile user base in India has crossed 250million and is expected to double by 2011. No one can afford to miss this huge customer base. With the emergence of camera phones, PDAs, etc., the mobile phone has become an important companion, playing a more important role than just a mere talking device.

As such, we strongly feel that mobile search is the need of the hour. Imagine a situation where you stand confused in a mobile retail store and don't know whether you're being charged the right price for your favorite brand or model. With Cafegadgets mobile search, you can find out if you can get the same model for a better price by just sending us an SMS.

Our mobile search is a step forward in staying in touch with our customers even when they're not online.

Are you coming up with some more new technology advancements for your portal?

At the moment, effective EDI implementation with vendors is at the top priority list, as it'll simplify e-commerce operations to an unimaginable level in India. Apart from that, we're also working on completely revamping the look and feel of Cafegadgets while also adding new features to improve its stickiness.

What are your other future plans for cafegadgets.in?

We want to position Cafegadgets as a one-stop-shop for discovering, reviewing, comparing and buying gadgets. You will see lot of Cafegadgets' products both in the online as well as the offline world very soon.

We're also venturing into alternate sales channels like m-commerce and social community marketing, which we expect to be the key drivers for us in near future.
