SMEs are the real "change agents" in any economy
By Anuradha Ramamirtham | Jan 9, 2008
This Article:
Pankaj Patel, vice president of Carazoo.com, India, talks about the IT usage in his company, and voices his opinion on how SMEs are making a difference in the Indian economy in an interview with Anuradha Ramamirtham

Outline some of the practices that SMB outfits must adopt for guaranteed IT management.

Emerging businesses should evolve methodology like "in-house" to evaluate "right" technologies, which will help in achieving their business goals. They shouldn't "blindly ape" others in choosing technologies. SMBs should be effectively trained in newer technologies and resultant process. Last but not the least, it's crucial to ensure that the feedback is continuous in the "success/failure" of IT and solutions.

What is your opinion on the SMB market becoming more and more tech-savvy?

In my personal opinion the SMEs are the real "change agents" in any economy, especially in a rapidly growing one such as ours. The more they adopt newer proven technologies and sound business processes, whether called "hi-tech" or not, faster they will be able to respond to the marketplace.

How dependent is Carazoo on technology for its business process?

Technology plays a strong role in all our business process. Nearly 50% of our business processes rely on technology. Presently, we are using applications, such as customized interactive animation based web stores, online marketing of such web stores, customized rich interactive media templates, Customer Relationship Management (CRM), and portals.

Divulge something about the infrastructure deployed at the company's data center and at other locations?

We have done a huge investment in our infrastructure. We work 24x7, host applications and mail solutions for our clients, and license our various products. All these require state-of-the-art hardware, software -- including storage, blade servers, fiber-based gigabit networking and communication equipment, fire-walls, security systems, etc.

How do you select your technology?

During technology selection, factors such as application being fairly proven and reliable, scalable, local support availability, and cost are considered.

yup i strongly believe that they are actually making difference to the indian economy as they have become tech-savvy now-a-days. but still they need to capitalize more on their capacity and their abilities to carry on with their motive & vision. But nevertheless, they are getting recognized in the economy and their need as well. Now they should try n head towards perfection.

with reference to the comments made by "Anonymous" ATPL, Pune, my personal view is that his advice of using "consultants" is not necessarily a correct one! Consultants either charge too much for what you know anyway or those who are reasonably priced have no "idea"what they are taking about. Our compny a SME in the design space intally went for a "low priced "consultant" and he was "laughed out" based on his "advice". Subsequently, the company went in or aknown name, paid a huge consultancy fee and got nothing much in return except a few fancy reportsand PPt's!! I strongly believe that "emulating" others in similar space and betterign them in adoption of proven technology is really good. Which is what my compan y ultimately did and we are much better off.

I don't agree with the author, " blindly ape" others to choose technology. If you study SME market, they fall short of IT or Tech savvy resource. So, it's best for SME to find right partners who can guide them for right, cost effective, IT technology to adopt, otherwise they end up with wrong decision and heavy investments burden. Any consultants can be good advisiors for their growth with reasonable investment and save lot of cost. IT is not only Window application, it's a Technology for Growth of an orginization. ATPL has helped many clients to save their hard earned money and provided Right solutions.
