This Article:
Supermicro Computer, a provider of application-optimised, high performance server, blade, and workstation solutions, has announced the launch of new Server Building Block Solutions that deliver 6 Gbps SAS 2.0 performance. The launch includes eight systems plus five serverboard platforms, two SuperBlade servers, and three Universal I/O (UIO) cards. These product lines incorporate the latest LSI 6 Gbps SAS controller, 6 Gbps SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) RAID-on-Chip and a MegaRAID software stack.

According to Supermicro, the new SAS 2.0 solutions will increase bandwidth, be more scalable and reliable. Server Building Block Solutions is hoped to enable customers to improve storage performance and power efficiency.

The eight new Intel Xeon 5500 (Nehalem) processor-based systems with onboard 6 Gbps SAS technology includes 1U, 2U, 3U and 4U rackmount or tower servers and workstations with both 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch hard drive support. The Supermicro SAS 2.0 systems feature advanced thermal and power designs. Supermicro has also introduced the industry's first blade servers based on 6 Gbps SAS technology -- the SBI-7126T-S6 and SBI-7426T-S3 -- for 10-blade and 14-blade enclosures.

The new Universal I/O (UIO) add-on controller cards support eight internal 6Gbps SAS ports and RAID functionalities for more flexible storage applications. To read more about these product lines, visit www.Supermicro.com/SAS2/

The LSI 6Gbps SAS controller and RAID-on-Chip ICs build upon the current 3 Gbps SAS technology. Large enterprises as well as SMBs can benefit from Supermicro's SAS-enabled Supermicro solutions. The solutions will use Seagate's 6Gbps SAS enterprise Savvio (2.5-inch) and Cheetah (3.5-inch) drive families, providing reliability and data integrity even for demanding enterprise applications.

6 Gbps SAS is being touted to offer a number of improvements over the current 3 Gbps/s SAS and SATA. Improvements include the possibility to use cable lengths of up to 10 meters -- ensuring storage integrity in large cluster and datacenter deployments. The 6 Gbps SAS controllers can also interact with expanders and other infrastructure devices to improve system diagnostics, status, management, configuration and initialization.
