Samsung, a leader in digital consumer electronics and information technology, has announced a new line of high-density hard drives. These drives -- known as the Spinpoint F3 -- are aimed at high-end computing environments.
The Spinpoint F3 operates at 7,200 RPM and is available in different storage capacities of up to 1 terabyte (TB). It is able to pack in that much storage with two 500 GB platter disks. According to Samsung, this drive meets datacenter requirements for additional storage. In addition to address the needs of storage and performance, the new drives are also more energy efficient.
The Spinpoint F3 utilizes advanced 500 GB per platter technology to provide a two-platter 1 TB disk drive. The company stated that an increased areal density per platter provides up to a 30 percent higher performance than a three-platter 1 TB, 3.5-inch disk drive. Reducing the number of platters also cuts down on the number of mechanical parts, thereby increasing reliability in terms of anti-shock and data failure. The Spinpoint F3 hard disk drives also utilize Samsung's technologies of low noise operation, namely SilentSeek and NoiseGuard.
The Spinpoint F3 uses a 3.0 Gbps SATA interface, Native Command Queuing (NCQ) features and a 16 MB or 32 MB buffer memory. The Spinpoint F3 is currently available in 500 GB capacities worldwide. The 1 TB drive is scheduled for initial shipment later in August.
