Run Your Computer Network without Electricity
By enterpriser staff | Nov 05, 2008 1359 hrs IST
This Article:
Electricity is the basic component of any business infrastructure, therefore ensuring a continuous supply of electricity is important. But then there are times when load-shedding is inevitable and this could cripple the functioning of a business. Though large companies can afford to tackle this issue by installing a backup power system, it's the SMEs who face the brunt of load-shedding. But all this is set to change, thanks to Scott Johnson's latest invention.

Scott Johnson of GNUveau Networks has developed a solar-powered Internet "hub" system, which runs Ubuntu GNU/Linux. Labeled as SolarNetOne, Scott builds to order these systems at his home at Daytona Beach, Florida. The system uses readily available hardware that Scott modifies to run on 12V -- and to use minimal power than the stock versions. As these systems use solar power, it's not only load-shedding proof but also results in huge savings in electricity costs.

SolarNetOne will prove to be a boon to business' that run from remote villages, and also at places that do not get adequate electricity supply. SolarNetOne can also create new business opportunities in remote villages, such as setting up cyber cafes, computer training institutes etc. Currently there are real installations of SolarNetOne running in Africa, which provide wireless connectivity and Internet access to hundreds of people. SolarNetOne could help bridge the digital divide and provide Internet connectivity even to most remote corners of the earth.
