It's been two years since Microsoft and Novell entered in a partnership to build a bridge between SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and Windows. As a result of this partnership Microsoft and Novell are set to launch the open-source implementation of the Microsoft Silverlight runtime--Moonlight.
Moonlight provides Linux-based users with the same rich, high-definition media capabilities offered by Silverlight, which is currently available for the Windows and Apple environments. Moonlight will be provided as an open source plug-in for the Firefox Web browser.
Moonlight 1.0 Beta is set to launch in the mid November, 2008, and uses Microsoft's Media Pack 1.0 for playing back video and audio. Apart from this it is compatible with Silverlight 1.0 s engine and is scriptable with the browser JavaScript. Moonlight 1.0 Beta is C/C++ based and will be available for both 32-bit as well as 64-bit versions Linux OS.
Though Silverlight still has to catch up with Adobe Flash, it would be interesting to see how well Moonlight does in the Linux desktop domain.
